Embark on a moderate hike along the Pipeline Overlook via Rattlesnake Gulch and Pipeline Trail, a route spanning 3.8 miles (6.2 km) with an elevation gain of 657 feet (200 metres). You can expect to complete this journey in about 2 hours and 1 minute. The initial ascent through Rattlesnake Gulch is rocky and challenging, but it rewards you with expansive views of the Salt Lake Valley, including Salt Lake City, the Oquirrh Mountains, and the Great Salt Lake from the Pipeline Overlook. As you continue onto the Pipeline Trail, the path becomes smoother, winding through areas rich with sagebrush and wildflowers, especially vibrant in spring and summer.
To plan your visit, note that the trailhead is conveniently located near Salt Lake County, just a few minutes from the base of Millcreek Canyon. Be aware that a fee is charged per vehicle when you exit Millcreek Canyon. If you are bringing your dog, remember that off-leash access is permitted on odd-numbered days, while leashes are required on even days to ensure a pleasant experience for all trail users.
This trail is situated within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, offering a glimpse into the region's natural beauty and history. The Pipeline Trail section itself follows an old water route, providing a unique historical context to your outdoor adventure. It is a popular choice for those seeking diverse terrain and panoramic vistas without venturing too far from the city, making it a notable option among the local hiking opportunities.
