The Hasenbach Spring – Wimsener Cave loop from GVV Zwiefalten-Hayingen offers a delightful journey through the diverse landscapes of the Swabian Alb. You'll wander through rolling hills, dense pine forests, and lush meadows, with the beautiful Hasenbach stream guiding you through the Glastal. The trail's highlight is the Wimsener Cave, a unique water cave, and you'll also pass geological features like the Tuff Waterfalls, making for a varied and engaging experience.
This moderate hiking route covers 7.2 miles (11.6 km) with 906 feet (276 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 18 minutes. It's a great option for hikers with good fitness looking for a half-day adventure. Remember to pack a light jacket if you plan to take the boat tour inside the Wimsener Cave, as it stays cool at 7 to 8 °C (45-46 °F) year-round. The Bio-Gasthof Friedrichshöhle near the cave provides a convenient stop for food and drink.
What makes this trail particularly special is the Wimsener Cave, also known as Friedrichshöhle, which is Germany's only active water cave accessible by boat. Beyond this geological marvel, the area is rich in history, with archaeological finds from the Bronze Age discovered within the cave. The trail also offers views of wild caves like the Glass Cave, adding an extra layer of exploration to your hike.
