Embark on a challenging touring bicycle adventure around Kielder Water, a difficult 46.4-mile (74.7 km) loop that promises expansive conifer woodlands and panoramic views of Northern Europe's largest man-made lake. This route, with its undulating course and 3485 feet (1062 metres) of elevation gain, offers a rewarding workout, especially on the steeper gravel sections found on the northern side. You can expect to spend around 6 hours and 39 minutes cycling, enjoying the mixed surfaces and the impressive Victorian railway engineering of the Kielder Viaduct.
This multi-user trail, largely traffic-free, is designed for various visitors, including cyclists, walkers, and even those using mobility scooters. While the southern side of Kielder Water features more manageable hills, the northern sections are notably more demanding. If you are concerned about the climbs, an electric bike can make the journey more enjoyable. Allow ample time for your ride, especially if you plan to pause and take in the scenery or observe the abundant wildlife, such as red squirrels and ospreys.
The Kielder Forest loop is set within the vast Kielder Water & Forest Park, England's largest forest, and offers more than just natural beauty. Along the route, you will discover an engaging art trail with unique installations like Freya's Cabin and the Waterstones at Kielder Dam. Kielder is also part of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, Europe's largest, providing exceptional stargazing opportunities on clear nights, and even a chance to spot the Northern Lights.
