Buckbarrow

Hiking

4.9

(34)

A steep rocky fist above Wasdale, Buckbarrow is a characterful little Wainwright fell. It faces off against the Wastwater Screes on the opposite side of the valley, and is a fine vantage for their many dramatic gullies and buttresses. Buckbarrow is mainly characterised by its impressive south-facing crags, which are easily circumnavigated on good paths.

Despite appearing as a separate mass from the valley, Buckbarrow is merely the abrupt southwestern termination of the broader and higher Seatallan. From the rocky knoll of Buckbarrow’s summit, very little height is lost before the land sweeps upwards gradually to its parent peak. Middle Fell completes the trio, separated from Buckbarrow by the rift caused by Greendale Gill.

A rocky fist of a fell above the wonderfully scenic Wast Water

A minor road runs below Buckbarrow’s southern cliffs linking Wast Water to the village of Gosforth. Approaches to the fell invariably begin from the road, either at Harrow Head or Low Greendale. There are accommodation options in Wasdale Head, which can either be a short drive or a picturesque but long walk away. The foot of Buckbarrow is only a hop, skip and a jump from the spot frequently cited as England’s favourite vista, that of Yewbarrow, Great Gable and Lingmell framing the length of Wast Water.

The views from Buckbarrow’s summit are unsurprisingly grand, it being superbly located in arguably the Lake District’s most spectacular valley. However, the most extensive vista is from a spur of rock that’s prominent in the ascent from the west. From the spur, the Scafells, England’s highest mountains, are seen magnificently beyond the head of Wast Water, England’s deepest lake.

    Hiking

Buckbarrow is a Wainwright in the Western Lake District. It's most commonly hiked from Greendale and the ascent has beautiful views down to Greendale Gill. komoot maps are really helpful for this area because they show the possible ascent paths that are absent from other maps. Care must be taken to avoid the crags on the south east side of Buckbarrow.

    Hiking

Buckbarrow was the first of my three Wainwrights today and it is a short but stiff old climb from the road but it is on a decent path and the views are great.
