Butrint is very picturesquely located on a wooded peninsula in the Butrint lagoon directly on the Strait of Corfu. Buthrothum was an important port, trading place and cultural center from the Greek settlement in antiquity up to the Ottoman period and is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Due to the continuity of the settlement there is a fascinating variety of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venizian and Ottoman remains. Butrint has been on the World Heritage List since 1992.
