    Hiking

Wonderful excursion from the city to Collepino, the complete itinerary would be 5km and retraces the path of the old Roman aqueduct still in excellent condition. The view over the olive groves is extraordinary

Very pleasant path, which can also be covered on foot. If you are on a bike, be careful because it is frequent to meet pedestrians, especially in the summer and on weekends

    500m

Embark on a moderate 7.8-mile (12.6 km) hike through the Monte Subasio Regional Park, gaining 1650 feet (503 metres) in elevation over approximately 4 hours. This loop takes you through extensive olive groves and Mediterranean woods, offering panoramic views of the Umbria valley and the medieval skyline of Spello. A significant portion of the path follows an ancient Roman aqueduct, providing a remarkably level section for several kilometers before a steeper ascent to the charming village of Collepino.

While the initial four kilometers from Spello are mostly flat and relatively easy, prepare for a notably steeper and more challenging climb as you approach Collepino. This final half-kilometer push involves a significant elevation gain, and you may encounter loose rocks on this demanding section. The trail is generally tranquil, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and historical atmosphere of the region, with picnic tables and benches available for rest.

The most distinguishing feature of this route is the ancient Roman aqueduct, an impressive feat of engineering from the time of Augustus, parts of which are still clearly visible. This historical structure adds a unique dimension to your hike. Collepino itself is a well-preserved medieval village, offering an authentic glimpse into Umbrian life with its stone walls and houses, making it a peaceful destination within the loop.

Embark on a moderate hike from Spello to Collepino, a journey of 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with an elevation gain of 1209 feet (369 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 56 minutes. You will walk through picturesque olive groves and Mediterranean scrubland, with sections winding through woods. A unique feature of this route is following an ancient Roman aqueduct, parts of which are still visible above ground, offering panoramic views of the Chiona valley and the Apennine hills.

While much of the initial 4-5 kilometers is almost flat, the final ascent to Collepino involves a steeper climb, which can be challenging. The trail is generally considered suitable for most ages and fitness levels, but be prepared for that last push. You can find interpretive boards along the route providing historical information about the aqueduct, enhancing your understanding of the region's past.

This trail stands out for its blend of natural beauty and historical significance, connecting the medieval village of Spello with the remote, restored castle village of Collepino. It offers consistent stunning views of the Umbrian valley and provides an opportunity to experience the true essence of Umbria, away from crowds, appreciating the local flora and fauna.
