There are no sources about a previous building. It was probably a wooden church and was one of the churches built in the 9th century during the missionary period in Saxony. It was under the jurisdiction of the Archdeaconry of Ahlden in the Diocese of Minden. Of the original church building, only the base of the tower, constructed of bog ironstone, remains. In the 14th century, a Gothic nave was built in place of the Romanesque nave. The old buttresses and a pointed arch window still bear witness to this today.
