The trig point on Rievaulx Moor (part of Helmsley Moor) stands at 328m and offers great views across the moorland and woods in all directions.
The ridgeline trail that skirts the moor is great for running with good conditions underfoot, great views and an obvious loop.

    410m

Embark on a challenging jogging route through the North York Moors, starting from the historic market town of Helmsley. This difficult 16.2-mile (26.1 km) loop takes you past the impressive ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, offering a glimpse into centuries of history. You will gain 1334 feet (406 metres) in elevation over approximately 3 hours and 3 minutes, experiencing a mix of tranquil valley paths and open moorland. Expect varied terrain as you move from shaded woodland tracks to expansive, windswept landscapes. The route also climbs to Rievaulx Terrace, where you can enjoy sweeping views over the abbey and surrounding countryside.

Prepare for a demanding jogging experience that requires very good fitness due to its length and significant elevation changes. The trail features a mix of surfaces, including gravel paths, unpaved sections, and some asphalt. Be aware that certain woodland areas, especially in Blackdale Howl Wood, can become quite muddy after rainfall, so choose your footwear accordingly. You will also encounter stone steps in various places along the way. Plan your visit to allow ample time for this extensive loop.

This route offers a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty within the North York Moors National Park. You will begin with views of Helmsley Castle before descending into the peaceful Rye Dale. The journey to Rievaulx Abbey provides a chance to connect with the past, while the subsequent climb to Rievaulx Terrace rewards you with panoramic vistas. It is an excellent way to experience the diverse landscapes of the region, from ancient monastic sites to vast open moorland.
