The formerly busy postal route Hamburg - Lüneburg - Braunschweig led through the marshy Mühlenbach valley, so that a bridge and a causeway were necessary.
In 1789, King George III of England and Elector of Hanover had the bridge built from bricks and granite stones.
It's great that this historic bridge, worth seeing, has survived all these years and has been preserved to this day.
