The cathedral was built in the 4th century and has undergone various changes and restorations over the centuries. Inside the cathedral there are remarkable frescoes and works of art from different eras. Of particular note is the 12th-century fresco of "Christ Pantocrator" that adorns the dome of the cathedral. The main portal of the cathedral is richly decorated and depicts biblical scenes and religious symbols. It is an impressive example of Romanesque sculpture.

A series of architectural and decorative changes to the Cathedral of Aosta took place between the 13th and early 16th centuries and were supported by distinguished bishops and noble families from the Aosta Valley. They radically changed the appearance of the cathedral. The building now received many Gothic and Renaissance elements.

The new facade, built in 1848 in a neoclassical style with statues of saints and imposing columns, pushed the Renaissance facade into an atrium. In addition, the Rosary Chapel was built in 1860 in neo-Gothic style, eliminating one of the 15th-century aisles of the monastery.
