Embark on a moderate hike up McFarland Peak, a 6.2 miles (10.0 km) route that climbs 1579 feet (481 metres) and typically takes about 3 hours and 6 minutes. You will traverse diverse terrain, moving through ancient bristlecone pine forests and past sculpted limestone formations. The summit rewards you with spectacular 360-degree views stretching across Southern Nevada and California, including a clear sight of Mummy Mountain Viewpoint. Along the way, you will also pass through a beautiful Aspen Grove, adding to the varied scenery.

When planning your visit, be aware that conditions on McFarland Peak can be challenging, especially from mid-fall through late spring. During these months, ice and snow can make the steep gully section dangerous, requiring extra caution. You might also encounter parts of the trail that are eroded or faint, so be prepared for some route-finding challenges. Always check current weather and trail conditions before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

This trail is a highlight within the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, known for its unique ecosystem and geological features. The presence of ancient bristlecone pine forests, some of the oldest living organisms on Earth, makes the journey particularly special. The expansive views from the peak offer a broad perspective of the surrounding desert landscape and mountain ranges, making it a notable destination for those seeking a rewarding climb with panoramic vistas.

Embark on the Upper and Lower Bristlecone Trail Loop, a moderate hike spanning 6.4 miles (10.3 km) with an elevation gain of 953 feet (290 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours and 1 minute, moving through diverse landscapes. As you hike, you will discover dense pine-fir forests and vibrant groves of quaking aspen, which are particularly striking in the autumn months. The trail offers rewarding views of the surrounding peaks, including Mummy Mountain, and expansive vistas down into Lee Canyon.

Before you plan your visit, be aware that the upper section of the Bristlecone Trail is currently closed due to storm damage and is not expected to reopen until 2029. While the lower portion might be accessible, always check for current conditions and any closures with the U.S. Forest Service before heading out. This trail provides a cooler escape from the heat of the Las Vegas valley, making it a popular choice for those seeking a refreshing outdoor experience.

A significant feature of this route is the opportunity to encounter ancient bristlecone pines, some of which are thousands of years old, especially as you traverse Highpoint Ridge. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as the distinctive Mt. Charleston chipmunks, adding to the natural charm of your hike. The varied terrain and unique flora make this loop a notable option within the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.
