Brindisi is a port city in Puglia on the Adriatic. The red stone Alfonsino Castle stands on a small island at the mouth of the port. The imposing limestone Monument to the Italian Sailor in the shape of a rudder offers views of the sea and the city. On the other side of the port, the Swabian Castle dates back to the 13th century. At the top of the Virgilian Staircase, instead, stand the Roman Columns.

During the Roman Empire, it reached its peak importance as the terminus of the Appian Way, the famous road that allowed the transit of goods between Rome and the East.
