Embark on the Cactus Wren and Manville Trail Loop for an easy hike through the vibrant Sonoran Desert. This route spans 3.5 miles (5.7 km) and involves a gentle elevation gain of 142 feet (43 metres), making it a perfect outing for about 1 hour and 29 minutes. As you hike, you will be surrounded by a dense landscape of towering saguaro cacti, palo verde trees, and ocotillos, offering a true taste of the desert's unique flora.
To begin your adventure, head to the Signal Hill picnic and parking area, which is accessible via gravel roads. While the trail is generally considered easy and suitable for families, be aware that some sections near Signal Hill can be steep and rocky. You might also encounter equestrians sharing the path, so keep an eye out for them as you explore.
This loop offers a fantastic opportunity to observe the desert's wildlife, including various lizards and birds like the iconic cactus wren. A significant highlight of the trail is Signal Hill itself, where you can discover ancient Hohokam petroglyphs etched into the rocks. From this vantage point, you will also enjoy expansive views across the Tucson Mountains, adding a historical and scenic dimension to your hike.
