The castle was built between 1680 and 1690 on the site of an older castle complex as the residence and administrative headquarters of the Schaumberg family. After the Schney branch of the Schaumberg family died out, the castle passed into the possession of the Holstein von Brockdorff family in 1706, whose descendants owned the castle until 1873. In 1950, the local gymnastics club, the Freie Turnerschaft Schney, purchased the building and used it as a gymnasium. Today, the castle contains a gymnasium, which is primarily used by the Freie Turnerschaft Schney for sporting activities and festivals.
