Embark on the challenging Günther Messner Memorial Trail, a difficult hike spanning 9.7 miles (15.7 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3486 feet (1062 metres). This route will take you around 7 hours and 6 minutes to complete, guiding you through diverse terrain. You'll experience alpine meadows dotted with wooden huts, transition to rocky landscapes, and navigate exposed sections with the aid of steel cables and an iron ladder. The majestic Geisler peaks will be your constant companion, offering dramatic views as you progress.
To plan your visit, the trailhead is accessible by public transport. You can take a bus from Klausen/Chiusa or Brixen/Bressanone through Villnöss Valley to St. Peter. From there, change to another bus heading to Würzjoch pass and alight at the Russis Kreuz bus stop, which marks the beginning of the trail. Be prepared for a full day of hiking and ensure you have appropriate gear for the difficult sections.
This memorial trail offers more than just a physical challenge; it's a journey through one of the Dolomites' most serene landscapes. The path is dedicated to Günther Messner, a mountaineer from Val di Funes and brother of Reinhold Messner, who tragically died during an expedition in 1970. As you reach Peitlerscharte, you'll find expansive views across the Dolomites, with weathered trail crosses inviting quiet reflection on the profound history and natural beauty of the area.
