A network of underground lava cellars stretches across an area of almost 3 km² beneath the town of Mendig. At a depth of 32 meters, this subterranean "landscape" is unique in the world. Back when the volcanoes erupted and covered the land with embers and ash, a lava flow also flowed toward present-day Mendig.
