The memorial stone marks the spot where the French landed in the last invasion of Britain in 1797. The local population rallied and the civilians demonstrated force along the cliffs to intimidate the French. Among the locals were many women who were mistaken for infantry in their traditional Welsh dress of red shawls and black hats. Local heroine Jemima Nicholas famously marched with her pitchfork to capture 12 French soldiers who later surrendered. The battle is famous in Welsh history and there is a beer called Jemima’s Pitchfork, which is nice.
