Around 1500, Bad Belzig was surrounded by a city wall made of fieldstones and bricks, complete with fortifications and gates. Watchtowers served as part of the city's defenses and were projecting defensive structures within the city wall. They were equipped with loopholes. Pre-designated citizens, listed in registers, served here. In the 17th century, they lost their military function and were often remodeled and used for other purposes.

In 1298, the largely undefended Saxon town of Belzig was captured by the Brandenburgers. This was a clear indication that the town needed solid fortifications. Therefore, in the first half of the 14th century, a town wall made of fieldstones and bricks was constructed on its western, northern, and eastern sides. On the southern side, a rampart with a wooden palisade fence was retained, as marshy terrain there severely hampered enemy advances.

In the northwest, Belzig was further protected by a deep town moat. Defensive gate towers stood at the Wiesenburg Gate and the Brandenburg Gate.
