As you ascend, the trail opens up to the expansive Monte Prato Fiorito Summit, a vast meadow providing 360-degree panoramic views of Garfagnana and Valle della Lima, stretching towards the Apuan Alps and the Apennines. In spring, the meadow transforms into a 'Blooming Meadow' with daffodils and other vibrant flowers. This loop is designed for experienced hikers seeking a challenging and scenic adventure.
To prepare for this difficult route, ensure you have good fitness and sure-footedness. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are essential due to the varied terrain, which includes steep climbs and rocky sections. You can typically begin this loop from the small village of San Cassiano di Controne, located near Bagni di Lucca. The trail is well-marked, a testament to the local volunteers who restored it in 2019, making navigation straightforward once you are on the path.
This trail was once known as the 'Alta Via dei Pastori', meaning 'Shepherds' High Path', reflecting its historical use and connection to the region's pastoral heritage.
