Embarking on the Sassolungo group hike is to experience one of the most breathtaking and rewarding journeys in the Italian Dolomites. Known to locals and seasoned hikers as the Sassolungo Circuit (or Langkofel Circuit), this trail offers an unforgettable full-day adventure circling the entire, monumental Sassolungo and Sassopiatto mountain groups. This is not a simple ascent to a summit but a comprehensive tour through a stunningly raw and rocky landscape, where the scenery transforms with every turn of the path. The complete loop covers a challenging distance of approximately 16 kilometers (about 10 miles), demanding a good level of fitness and a full day's commitment. Most hikers should plan for a duration of 6 to 8 hours, which allows for a steady pace and ample time to absorb the magnificent panoramic views and stop for photos or refreshments at the mountain huts along the way.

The allure of this hike lies in its ability to showcase the sheer scale and diverse character of the Sassolungo massif. As you traverse the high-altitude path, you are constantly in the presence of dramatic peaks and unique rock formations that define the Val Gardena skyline. The trail itself presents a moderate challenge, primarily due to its length and the rugged terrain underfoot, but it doesn't involve technical climbing, making it accessible to experienced walkers. Along the route, your perspective of the iconic peaks constantly shifts. You will witness the jagged profile of the Grohmannspitze, the distinct shape of the Innerkofler Turm, and the famous bear-claw-like peak known as Zahnkofel (or Il Dente in Italian). This continuous visual spectacle, combined with the vast alpine meadows and distant views of other Dolomite ranges, solidifies the Sassolungo Circuit's reputation as a must-do hike for any mountain enthusiast visiting the region.

This point is nice to see the smaller peaks, such as the Grohmanns- and Fünffingerpitze, but the Marmolada on the opposite side is also impressive. The more unknown peaks, such as Zahnkofel, Innerkofler Tower and of course, are also visible on the further path the Plattkofel itself.
