Juniper Valley near Wonsees

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

Unfortunately, the juniper has gotten a bit old and many other bushes are slowly overgrowing the rocky slope. Once again, sheep were to graze in order to continue to secure the foundation for the juniper heath.

Evangelical Parish Church Krögelstein

Highlight • Religious Site

High above the village Krögelstein lies the parish church in its unmistakable shape. The building, which dates back to the Gothic late phase, is very uniform except for a few changes from the Renaissance period. The church tower was built around 1560, the attached stair tower with spiral staircase was built in 1607, as can be read in the coat of arms of the family of patrons of Giech. The church room with its old stalls with doors and the double galleries is aligned on the raised around several levels choir room with cross vault. In it is an interesting pulpit altar. The altar cross, created around 1500, is a Bamberg work. The galleries were built in the Baroque spirit around 1780 and are typical of Margrave churches. On the west wall are two epitaphs for family members of Giech. A bronze epitaph of 1609 and one of sandstone from 1617. On the opposite side, emigrants commemorate on a plaque of their former homeland. This is one of the few signs that remind of the fact that especially in the second half of the 19th century many people moved away from the economically barren Franconian Switzerland, as here to Philadelphia / USA.

Swedish rock in Krögelstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Schwedenfelsen (often also called Schwedenfels) is a striking rock formation in the "rock village" of Krögelstein, which is known for its spectacular dolomite cliffs and houses built close to the rock face. The name "Schwedenfelsen" dates back to the Thirty Years' War. According to a local legend, the inhabitants of Krögelstein hid from the Swedish troops in the craggy rocks and the surrounding caves.

Säukirchner Tower

Highlight • Climb

The Säukirchner Turm is a very beautiful climbing rock in a fantastic location in the Kaiserbachtal near Krögelstein. Due to its importance as a breeding ground for rare birds (especially eagle owls), the rock is subject to strict closure periods. A large meadow at the foot of the rock face makes the area a child's dream. Unfortunately, after heavy rainfall, it turns into a gigantic swamp. From the meadow to the rock, there is a small steep slope to overcome. It's only about 20 meters, but very steep up to the rock. There you will also find a small, heavily overhanging grotto about ten meters high, which unfortunately stays wet for quite a long time.

Old Bakehouse, Sanspareil

Highlight • Historical Site

It seems that no bread has been baked in this old bakery for a long time.
The necessary equipment is still available.

In this extraordinary landscape situation, the oriental building and the kitchen building opposite were built between 1744 and 1748 according to plans by the court architect Joseph St. Pierre, which served the festivities of the Bayreuth court. These two buildings are grouped around a separate garden ground floor, which was reconstructed in 1984 based on a copper engraving from 1748.
