Ely Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

The ancient cathedral city of Ely stands proud at 85 feet (26 m) above sea level, the highest land in the Fens. Its towering and spectacular cathedral dominates the skyline for many miles around. The city is a fantastic base from which to explore the Fens, with many good accommodation options.

The city contains two separate Sites of Special Scientific Interest: one of the UK's finest examples of medieval ridge and furrow agriculture and the Ely Pits and Meadows, which incorporate the Roswell Pits Nature Reserve.

Ely Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Ely is built on a 23-square-mile island which at 85 feet / 26 m, is the highest land in the Fens. Thanks to this, Ely was not waterlogged like the surrounding Fenland, and was originally an island separated from the mainland, until drained in the 18th century.
