Circus Maximus

Highlight • Historical Site

Circo Massimo, or Circus Maximus in Latin, was the largest stadium for chariot racing in ancient Rome. It was 600 meters long and 140 meters wide, and could accommodate approximately 150,000 spectators. Located in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills, the stadium was the scene of many spectacular and exciting races, as well as other events such as gladiator fights, athletic competitions and religious ceremonies. The Circus Maximus was built in the 6th century BC. by King Tarquinius Priscus, and was later expanded and rebuilt by several emperors, such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, Claudius and Domitian. Little remains of the original stadium, except the outline of the racecourse and a few ruins of the stands and arcades. You can visit the site for free and imagine what it used to look like.

Temple of Hercules Victor

Highlight • Religious Site

The Forum Boarium was the livestock market of ancient Rome. It was located on a flat piece of land on the Tiber between the Capitoline, Aventine and Palatine hills. It was Rome's oldest forum and an important center for trade and religion. There were several temples dedicated to gods such as Hercules, Portunus and Fortuna. Some of these temples can still be seen in the current square, which is called Piazza Bocca della Verità.
