Old Cottbus Power Station

Highlight • Monument

The old Cottbus electricity works came into being after the town mills at Cottbuser Mühlengraben were destroyed in a fire in 1882. One wanted to use the hydropower of the trench to generate electricity in the future, so that a tram could be powered. As a result, what was once the most modern power station in the Mark Brandenburg was built from 1901 to 1903. Equipped with water turbines, steam engines and boiler systems, it generated electricity using the water power of the town mill. The plant went into operation on April 27, 1903, supplying the new tram and 138 house connections with around 800,000 kWh of direct current. The plant's turbines ran regularly until 1968, before it was replaced by large-scale coal-based power plants. After the fall of the Wall, the building was temporarily used as a large disco.
The Wilhelmsmühle was built in 1836 as a fulling mill for cloth. After 1856 the fulling mill was converted into a grinding mill. At that time it was named "Wilhelmsmühle" after its owner. In 1876 an oil mill was added to the east gable end. At the time it was built, the fulling mill was the largest and first massive mill in the city. The mill was in operation for around one hundred years, until it was shut down in 1941 , since 1952 the house has been used as a kindergarten and youth club.

Wilhelm's Mill, Cottbus

Highlight • Monument

The Wilhelmsmühle, once the largest and first massive mill in Cottbus, is located on the Cottbuser Mühleninsel, in the immediate vicinity of the old electrical works, the tanner's houses and the art museum. It was built in 1836 as a fulling mill for cloth and was converted into a grinding mill in 1856. At that time it was named "Wilhelmsmühle" after the owner Wilhelm Marschan at the time. In 1876 an oil mill was added and in 1902 another part of the building with offices and apartments. The mill was in operation for around a hundred years until it was shut down in 1941. From 1952 the house was used as a kindergarten and youth club. In 2003 the building ensemble was extensively refurbished, which today includes houses a stylish furniture store and a cooking school.

The mill ditch branches off from the Spree at the southern tip of the mill island, flows around the island and flows back into the Spree at its northern tip. Two weirs at the beginning and end of the mill ditch create and balance out an artificial difference in height, thereby driving the old Wilhelmsmühle and generating electricity for the historic power plant.

The Goethepark is located in the Sandow district on Franz-Mehring-Straße. It is bordered on three sides by the Spree and connected to the Carl-Blechen-Park by the sheet metal bridge. The facility was laid out in 1895 as a city park by the Beautification Association on the marshy terrain of the Mühleninsel, making it the oldest park in Cottbus. With the construction of the power station in 1926/27, two new ways to access the park were created, the bridge at the power station and the bridge to the street “Am Spreeufer”. It was not until 1949 that the city park was renamed Goethepark. In the spacious park is the Amtsteich, which was used for carp farming around 1600 and in which a fountain gushes today. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkanlagen_in_Cottbus
