Description
If you're seeking a substantial mountain biking challenge near Huntsville, the Green Pond – Overlook loop delivers a difficult 34.5-mile (55.4 km) ride with a hefty 4941 feet (1506 metres) of climbing, taking around 5 hours and 30 minutes. This route is a true test of endurance and skill, perfect for experienced riders looking for a long, varied day on the trails.
What to expect on Green Pond – Overlook loop from Huntsville
The ride unfolds through varied terrain, starting with smoother, machine-cut singletrack on the East Fork trail before diving into the deeply forested Green Pond section, which is twistier and features rocks and sharp roots. You'll pass the pretty Green Pond itself, a highlight amidst the lush trees, and enjoy picturesque views of the surrounding mountainous landscape, including Mount Ogden. Be prepared for occasional rocky patches and know that clay meadows can become very muddy after rain, making for a tougher ride. This loop is best for mountain bikers who are comfortable with technical sections and sustained climbing.
Planning your visit
This popular route is best enjoyed during the summer months of June, July, and August, when conditions are typically drier. Be aware that certain sections, particularly those traversing clay meadows, can become very muddy and challenging after rain, so check trail conditions before you go. While the loop can be ridden in either direction, going clockwise is often recommended for easier navigation through the Snowbasin area. Dogs are permitted on the trail, making it a great option if you want to bring your canine companion.
