Notre-Dame-des-Sables, Berck-Plage

Highlight • Religious Site

The construction of the Notre Dame des Sables church dates back more than 100 years. Today, it has regained its original 'red beam' appearance, typical of coastal buildings and reminiscent of the swimwear of that era. The nave was built by shipwrights.

1891: after the death of the two doctors, a committee was formed in the country to erect a monument to them. Subscriptions poured in. Around 1892, the monument, in honour of the founding doctors of the Berck hospitals, was made by the sculptor Marie Cazin-Guillet (1844-1924), wife of Jean-Charles Cazin (1841-1901), a painter from Boulogne and brother of the doctor Henri Cazin (1836-1891). It was placed in front of the Kursaal gardens, on the Avenue de la Gare, and inaugurated on 23 August 1893. The monument was transferred to the municipality, which would be responsible for its care and maintenance. It remained in place until 1939 and was then dismantled; the round hump and the bronze bas-relief were hidden to prevent the material from melting during the Second World War. The various elements were found in the 1970s and 1980s and placed in different places: the bronze plaque at the town hall, the round bump on the Esplanade.
