The Cerro La Jara Loop is an easy 1.5-mile (2.4 km) trail that generally takes about one to two hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery or observe wildlife.
The trail is a narrow, unpaved natural surface, roughly 18 inches wide, and generally flat. While mostly gentle, sections on the southwest side of Cerro La Jara can become marshy, especially after spring thaws or during monsoon season. Hikers should be prepared for potentially wet feet in these conditions.
The trail starts near the Welcome Station within the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Parking is available at the Welcome Station.
Yes, a park entrance fee is required to enter the Valles Caldera National Preserve. You can find more information on fees and passes on the official NPS website.
Yes, pets are allowed on this trail. Please ensure they are on a leash and you follow all park regulations regarding pets.
The loop passes through a prairie dog colony, where you'll frequently see these animals. It's also outstanding elk habitat, and you might spot elk, especially late in the day. Other potential sightings include coyotes, golden eagles, hawks, various songbirds, black bears, and badgers.
The trail circles Valles Caldera National Preserve, the smallest volcanic dome in the park. You'll get expansive views of the Valle Grande, a 13-mile-wide volcanic caldera, and can observe other volcanic domes like South Mountain and Cerro del Medio. The trail also passes by the Prairie Dog Colony on Cerro La Jara Trail and sections of the Pond Trail - Valles Caldera.
This trail is notable for being accessible year-round, making it one of the few in Valles Caldera National Preserve with this option. During the summer monsoon season, you can enjoy a good display of wildflowers.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Cerro La Jara Trail and also passes through sections of the Pond Trail.
Beyond its easy accessibility year-round, this trail offers a unique combination of geological history, abundant wildlife viewing opportunities, and expansive views of the Valle Grande, providing a strong connection to the preserve's natural grandeur.
