This tour offers the "Best of the Volcano Cycle Route" if the entire route from Bad Vilbel to Schlitz is too long for you.
The route is designed so that you first travel to Lauterbach by train (via Frankfurt Central Station). From this starting point, the downhill ride outweighs the ascents. However, since this is a rail cycle route throughout, the climbs are very gentle anyway.
The Rail Cycle Volcano Cycle Route ends in Glauburg-Stockheim. From here, you take the regional train (Niddertalbahn) directly back to Bad Vilbel.
The Volcano Cycle Route largely winds along the route of the former Oberwaldbahn, an old railway line that ran from Lauterbach over the Vogelsberg mountain range and through the Wetterau region to Frankfurt. After the railway line to Glauburg-Stockheim was closed, the Volcano Cycle Path, paved with fine asphalt, was created through a magnificent open forest and meadow landscape with a barely noticeable incline across the plateaus of the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park, the largest volcanic massif in Central Europe.
It offers magnificent views of fields, forests, and meadows, as well as glimpses into idyllic villages and rural cultural heritage.
Bad Vilbel is a hub for cycling tours, offering many tours of all categories and themes. Individual combinations are possible thanks to connecting points: https://viltour.de/

Volcano cycle path: done! I tackled this main part third. After a stroll through the city and a cup of coffee we set off. I was very amazed at how beautiful the path is. Both in terms of the surface and the landscape on the right and left. Some of it went through forests, but also across fields and meadows. Here I was surprised by the vastness. The Vogelsberg is a mountain, but it doesn't give you the feeling of confinement. Up to just from Hartmannshain there are roads with little traffic. Otherwise you are unmolested by car traffic. After Hartmannshain and on other short sections the cycle path runs parallel to the main road. But this is not very disturbing. In my opinion, however, it would be worth considering whether it would not be better to install cyclist traffic lights in the Gedern area and in Selters. Since I drove the rest of the way from Stockheim a few days ago, I turned there to Effolderbach train station. In Stockheim you have to carry bikes, strollers, etc. through the tunnel to the platform. In Effolderbach, boarding is more or less at ground level; the platform is too low. Conclusion: the volcano cycle path is one of the most beautiful I know. The landscape is very beautiful and varied. The path quality is 1a! There are only slight inclines up to Hartmannshain. Afterwards you can (as a reward) just roll far without pedaling. Have fun cycling yourself.
Take the volcano cycle path from Lauterbach to Stockheim once. Nice route, a lot of forest Was originally a railway line and in Hartmannshain with about 575m above sea level. NN once the highest station in Hesse. Outward journey by train from Giessen to Lauterbach and from Stockheim back to the university town.
Actually, this should be a multi-day tour on the volcano cycle path and rail cycle path to Tann. Unfortunately there were no more accommodations from Fulda, so we went back to Frankfurt by train from Fulda. For me it was the first and definitely not the last tour on the volcano cycle path. The best that can happen to a disused railway embankment.
This year's tour with the Dietzenbachers went to the Vogelsberg. From Ortenberg, we took the bus, which included bike transport, to Lauterbach. We reserved seats in advance, as there were eight of us. It didn't cost anything extra. 😃 From there, we took the superbly maintained Vulkanradweg (volcano cycle path), the former railway line that steam locomotives once used through the Vogelsberg. The cycle path is truly a dream. Smooth asphalt, no bumps caused by roots, no cars, and, strangely enough, hardly any other cyclists. Of course, we also had a picnic on one of the many benches along the way. And when we arrived in Ortenberg and saw the beautiful old town, we knew where we would be heading tomorrow for our next trip.
Today's plan for cycling on the volcano cycle path was quite simple: Cycle uphill for the first half of the day and downhill for the second half 😀. And from the second half onwards lots of stops in the various beer gardens 🍻🍨
Volcano cycle path from Lauterbach to Altenstadt. With breaks to strengthen yourself, but also to visit the hydroelectric power station in Liesberg, etc. You were allowed to go in and had a lot explained to you. But it wasn't my fittest day... my wife ran away from me. After strengthening with ice, things got a little better. Greetings
Today on the most famous railway cycle path in Hessen to the spa town of Bad Salzschlirf, where gout patients used to be treated. Since gout is caused by poor diet, the bath was a meeting place for the rich who could afford such a diet. 🍖🍗🥩🍭🍬🍫🍯🦀
