This loop is considered moderately challenging. The Ash Canyon segment is rugged, less marked, and involves navigating huge boulders, pour-overs, and Class-2 and Class-3 scrambling. The Calico Tanks Trail features walking on beautiful sandstone slabs, ascending artistic sandstone steps, and scrambling through sandy washes. The last half-mile to the Calico Tanks can be particularly steep.
The ideal time to hike is between October and April. Winter and early spring are particularly good for cooler temperatures and to see water in the ephemeral Calico Tanks.
Yes, the trail offers spectacular scenery. You'll encounter sculpted Aztec red sandstone cliffs and the oasis of Calico Spring. Highlights include Cannibal Crag, Calico Spring, and the Red Rock Canyon Sandstone Formations. The Calico Tanks themselves are ephemeral pools, and a major draw is the incredible overlook with panoramic views of the Las Vegas Strip, La Madre Mountains, and other peaks.
Parking is available at the First Pullout (Calico I). This is a convenient starting point for the loop.
Yes, Red Rock Canyon generally requires reservations for entry, especially during peak seasons. It's advisable to plan ahead and check the official Red Rock Canyon website for current permit and reservation requirements before your visit.
Dogs are generally allowed on trails within Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please ensure you pack out all pet waste.
The Ash Canyon and Rattlesnake Trails are considerably less crowded and often unmarked, offering a sense of solitude. In contrast, the Calico Tanks Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Red Rock Canyon and is frequently visited by others.
Route finding can be an issue on the unmarked Ash Canyon and Rattlesnake Trails, which can appear and disappear. While the Calico Tanks Trail is generally easier to follow, always pay attention to your surroundings and consider carrying a map or GPS device.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Calico Hills Trail, Calico Basin Trail, Calico Overlook Trail, Girl Scout Trail, and Guardian Angel.
Yes, there is a Picnic Area directly on the route, and the Red Spring Picnic Area is also in the vicinity.
From the Calico Tanks overlook, you'll be treated to sweeping panoramic views. These include the Las Vegas Strip, the La Madre Mountains, Blue Diamond Mountain, Kraft Mountain, the Rainbow Mountains, and Potosi Mountain. The western side offers views across the vast Red Rock Canyon, while the eastern side looks out over the Calico Basin.
