Cremon/Krimuldas Castle was built shortly after 1250 for representative purposes and to protect and manage the estates of the Archbishop of Riga. It was destroyed in 1601 during the Polish-Swedish War. The estate continued to operate, and Krimuldas Palace was built approximately 200 meters to the west to replace the castle. The southern façade of the palace was restored as an artificial ruin to complement its park.

Absolutely. Latvia's National Parks are excellent for running. Gauja National Park, the largest, offers trails through deep river valleys and forests. Ķemeri National Park is known for its unique bog landscapes and boardwalks, such as the Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk. These parks provide pristine natural environments for runners.
Yes, Latvia boasts nearly 500 kilometers of diverse coastline. You can enjoy scenic runs along white sandy beaches, particularly in areas like Jūrmala, or explore rocky shores and coastal meadows. For long-distance enthusiasts, the Riga Old Town – Latvian National Opera loop offers a challenging coastal-urban experience, and the Baltic Coastal Hiking Trail (E9) provides extensive seaside running opportunities.
Many of Latvia's parks and urban routes are suitable for families, offering easier, flatter paths. The diverse landscapes, including forest trails and city parks, provide pleasant environments for all ages. For example, the Grīziņkalns Park loop is an easy option within Riga.
While many natural areas in Latvia are dog-friendly, it's always best to check specific regulations for national parks and protected areas. In urban parks and on general trails, dogs are usually welcome, often requiring them to be on a leash. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you clean up after them.
For those seeking longer runs, Latvia offers several options. The Freedom Monument – Freedom Monument loop from Rīgas Centrālā stacija is a challenging 21.4 km (13.3 miles) route through Riga. Additionally, Latvia is part of the Baltic Trails network, with the Baltic Coastal Hiking Trail (E9) and the Baltic Forest Trail (E11) providing extensive long-distance running opportunities across the country's diverse landscapes.
Yes, many running routes in Latvia offer stunning views and pass by notable landmarks. In Riga, routes often go past the Freedom Monument and through the historic Old Town. In natural areas, you can find trails with viewpoints over river valleys, such as the Gauja River, or unique bog landscapes. The Krimulda Manor and Estate loop near Sigulda offers impressive elevation changes and scenic vistas.
Latvia's natural beauty includes several waterfalls and gorges that can be incorporated into your runs. You might find trails near the Ventas Rumba Waterfall, one of Europe's widest waterfalls, or the picturesque Alekšupīte Waterfall. For gorges, areas like Gauja National Park feature impressive sandstone cliffs and ravines, such as the Ērgļi Cliffs, offering dramatic scenery.
The best time for running in Latvia is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant. Summer offers long daylight hours, while spring and autumn provide cooler temperatures and beautiful foliage. Winter running is also possible, especially on cleared urban paths, but requires appropriate gear for colder conditions.
Many urban running routes, especially in Riga, are easily accessible by public transport. For trails in national parks or more remote areas, public transport options might be less frequent, so checking local bus or train schedules in advance is advisable. Some popular trailheads may also have designated parking areas.
