Lake Byllesby Dam

Highlight • Monument

Before this dam was built in 1910, there had been a natural falls at this site known as Big Falls. It was a favorite picnic site for the townspeople in nearby Cannon Falls. The bridge over the Cannon Falls at this location provides a dramatic view of both the water flowing over the dam and downstream of the Cannon River, heading to join the Mississippi River. The Mill Towns State Trail crosses the Cannon River on this bridge. This rest stop marks the midway point on the Cannon Valley Triail between Cannon Falls at the western trailhead and Red Wing at the eastern trailhead. The rest stop provides a parking lot, water, free WiFi and a bicycle repair station with air pump and tools. You can also purchase a trail ticket here. The nearby village of Welch offers ice cream.

Cannon Valley Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A great bike trail. If you are only going to ride a portion of it, I recommend starting in Welch and pedaling up to Cannon Falls, then it's a gradual downhill all the way back (only like a 2 percent grade or something). The other way to Red Wing is nice in the fall, in the summer it can get pretty buggy because of all the swamp water right near the trail.

There is a brewery at both ends of the trail, and the Red Wing one makes great pizza!

M80 - Train Wreck Site

Highlight • Historical Site

Local legend has it that in about 1912 there was a major train wreck here which spilled the cargo of rough cut granite thought to be used for tombstones. Over 100 blocks rest on the hillside between the road and the river, with one on display at the Milepost 80 marker. Originally at this curve the railroad tracks were where the road is now. The stones range from suitcase size to grand piano dimensions with a few in the river. They are often difficult to see during full foliage.

This park needs a trail resurfacing, but it's still a nice connection of the Mill City State Trail to the Cannon Valley Trail. Also, don't go down the gravel down hill at the beginning of this trail, head over by the pool and catch the asphalt trail, much safer.

I love to check on the falls here, especially after a ton of rain, even a few days before as all the feeder streams that feed the Cannon raise the water level.
