Refugio del Pilar

Highlight • Mountain Hut

In our case it was the starting point of two of our E-Bike routes. From there and with easy access for vehicles and with free parking you have infinite possibilities to explore the island.

The Refugio del Pilar is a well-known landmark on the island of La Palma, located in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. This refuge is located in a strategic place in the middle of the caldera, surrounded by impressive mountainous landscapes and virgin nature.

El Refugio del Pilar is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers who want to explore the beauty of the National Park. It serves as a starting point or stop for various routes and trails that cross the Caldera de Taburiente.

The refuge has basic facilities for visitors, such as rest areas, camping areas and basic services. It is an ideal place to take a break, enjoy a picnic or spend the night if you are doing a longer expedition in the park.

From the Refugio del Pilar, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscapes and the Caldera de Taburiente in all its splendor. It is also a common starting point to ascend to the highest peaks on the island, such as Roque de los Muchachos, where the famous Astrophysical Observatory is located.

If you plan to visit the Refugio del Pilar, make sure you take with you everything you need for your stay, such as water, food, camping equipment, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. In addition, it is important to respect the natural environment and follow the regulations and recommendations established by the park authorities.

Altavista Refuge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Very good and easy double trail, around Montagna Blanka, leads you to a small openair restplace. Then a well maintained single zigzagging trail takes you fast up in the elevation. If you have to stop at every curve to enjoy the wiew wont judge you, ;) Sneaking among some lava eggs "Teide eggs" (unique lava mineral formations), you have made it to a cool rock scramble for a few hundreds of vertical meters before reaching the Refigio. Wow, the views.
Mt. Teide Permit is very important since it have to be obtained in advance! If you plan to stay overnight at the Refugio, the Permit comes with it for the day off, but reservation for the night is needed in advance. Both sunset and the sunrise are gorgeous from the top of the crater of Mt. Teide :D

There's a very good cafeteria here with a wide selection of delicious food and drinks. The information center is right next door. The cafeteria offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. Highly recommended and interesting! 👍🏻

These options provide experiences that blend with the islands' volcanic landscapes and rural charm.

Are there family-friendly hut options in the Canary Islands?

Yes, several options cater to families. For instance, Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide is a hotel that serves as a starting point for many hiking trails and is considered family-friendly. The Refugio del Pilar offers a picnic area with barbecue facilities and a playground, making it suitable for families. Regionally, some cave houses, like the Acusa Seca Cave House in Gran Canaria, are also noted as family-friendly.

What facilities can I expect at mountain huts in the Canary Islands?

Facilities vary by hut. For example, Altavista Refuge offers accommodation with a self-service kitchen, basic amenities, and a bathroom with cold water. Punta de los Roques Mountain Hut provides basic facilities including solar-powered electricity (weather permitting) and filtered rainwater for drinking, but guests need to bring their own sleeping bags and supplies. Always check specific hut details before your visit.

Do I need a permit to access certain areas or summits when staying at a hut?

Yes, for specific high-altitude areas, permits may be required. An overnight stay at Altavista Refuge, for example, grants you a permit for the Mt. Teide summit ascent on the day of check-out. It's advisable to reserve accommodation early, especially for popular spots like Altavista.

What outdoor activities can I do near huts in the Canary Islands?

The huts often serve as excellent bases for outdoor activities. You can enjoy extensive hiking, gravel biking, and mountain biking. For hiking, consider routes like 'The Forest of Enigmas Trail' or 'Vilaflor and Paisaje Lunar loop'. For biking, there are options like 'Gravel tour around the island of El Hierro' or 'Corralejo North Coast and Volcanoes Loop'. You can find more details on these activities in the Hiking in the Canary Islands, Gravel biking in the Canary Islands, and MTB Trails in the Canary Islands guides.

What is the best time to visit the Canary Islands for hut-based adventures?

The Canary Islands enjoy a mild climate year-round, making them suitable for outdoor activities in most seasons. However, for high-altitude mountain huts like Altavista Refuge, the cooler months (autumn to spring) are often preferred for hiking, especially for summit ascents, to avoid the intense summer heat. Always check local weather conditions before your trip.

Are there any historical or cultural sites near the huts?

While many huts are focused on natural immersion, some are close to sites of cultural interest. The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Snows is a religious and historical building that also functions as a hut, offering a blend of cultural and outdoor experience. Additionally, staying in a cave house provides a unique glimpse into the architectural heritage of the islands.

What should I bring for an overnight stay at a basic mountain hut?

For basic mountain huts like Punta de los Roques Mountain Hut, you should bring all necessary supplies, including sleeping bags, water purification tablets (if relying on rainwater cisterns), and food. Be prepared for limited or no running water and potentially no electrical outlets. Remember to pack out all your garbage.

Can I find huts that are good starting points for longer treks?

Absolutely. Many huts are ideal starting points for exploring the islands' extensive trail networks.
