July 18, 2026, Lockerbie Air Disaster Memorial Garden

On Sherwood Crescent Drive, the 11 residents of Lockerbie are remembered among the victims of the 1988 bombing. Due to the explosion at cruising altitude, the aircraft broke apart. Here, both wings with 3 remaining engines crashed. Together with approx. 90 tons of kerosene. The explosion was so immense that nothing remained of the affected houses except a gigantic crater. Neighbors in Lockerbie feared - just 2 years after Chernobyl - a meltdown at the nearby nuclear power plant at first. Today, houses stand in the street again - only at the memorial site does a large green gap remain. I have added original photos from the site at the time, as well as from later years. For those who want to know more, I recommend the detailed Wikipedia article: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockerbie-Anschlag

So this isn't Mennock Pass or Devil's Beef Tub, but it is something of a lesser known gem. Passing through the watershed of the Nith and Annan catchments, it's approximately a 200 metre ascent from Ae to Loch Ettrick. A steady incline, but the real fun is the descent. It's fast but not technical - long sweeping bends and little-to-no traffic.

In a different context than this memorial, Albino Luciani (the future Pope John Paul I) preached about the victims of a tragic accident, emphasizing the following: “Death is not the end, but only a very specific end: namely, the end of a first, provisional period of life and the beginning of a new, unending epoch. Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world.’ So there is another world. Not only his disciples believed in this other world, but also his opponents. The lawyer, for example, asked him what he must do ‘to inherit eternal life.’ (…) Precisely because it lasts forever, this life is so precious that everything else in the present world pales in comparison.”

Great little community cafe with bike parking. Do a sunday roast but have to book. Filled rolls, coffee and cakes all excellent.
