The Torre di Carbonifera is a nineteenth-century structure located in the municipality of Piombino, within the charming Gulf of Follonica, in Tuscany. Unlike other coastal towers in the area built for defensive purposes, this one was constructed as a commercial stopover. It marked the terminal point of the historic railway with which coal extracted from the inland mines reached the sea to be embarked. Today, the tower gives its name to the renowned Spiaggia di Carbonifera, one of the most appreciated seaside resorts in the Maremma.

Il Portale del Mistero is a 1999 marble sculpture created by Riccardo Grazzi. Located in Piazza Guerrazzi (Piazza a Mare) on the Follonica seafront, the work depicts an arched portal with a half-open rectangular door, positioned as if opening towards the sea. It symbolizes a symbolic passage towards the horizon or the mystery of the infinite Mediterranean Sea. A short staircase of 5 steps leads to the door, making it a characteristic photo spot.

The square hosts the Portale del Mistero, a work by Riccardo Grazzi from 1999. It also hosts the Torre Azzurra. A few meters of track have been left visible to recall the iron coming from nearby Elba and the shuttle to the foundry carried out by small wagons.

In the late 1940s, a short distance from the nearby Torre Mozza, the Carbonifera landing stage operated. It was built to load lignite extracted from Montebamboli, which reached the sea thanks to the railway. To allow loading, a jetty was built where wagons arrived by gravity. The railway was closed at the beginning of the 1900s, and the infrastructure serving the mine met the same fate.

Follonica is located in the province of Grosseto, in the center of the homonymous gulf that stretches from Piombino to Punta Ala. It is a town of about 20,000 inhabitants, and it is undoubtedly one of the most important holiday destinations in southern Tuscany. Very popular with both tourists and residents of neighboring provinces, Follonica is a destination for all ages and all tastes. Once an important iron and steel center, today Follonica is almost entirely dedicated to seaside tourism, thanks to its very long beaches and the numerous services it can offer. Furthermore, Follonica is an excellent base for exploring the surroundings, from the Maremma to the Grosseto coast: the exclusive resort of Punta Ala is just over 20 minutes away, while just 10 kilometers south is the beach of Cala Violina, one of the most beautiful in Tuscany. Baratti, Populonia, and other important locations on the Livorno coast are about a 30-minute drive away.
