Great Peat Bog

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

The large peat bog in the area of Lübbecke and Hille is the only raised bog in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located directly in the north of the Wiehengebirge and extends over an area of 467 hectares. Characteristic of the damp moor are the small, dark ponds, the heather plants, high observation towers and small birch groves. The moor is a special ecosystem that you can explore on several hiking trails.

Great Aue Lake

Highlight • Lake

The recreational area Große Aue is one of the most important local recreation areas in the Lübbecker Land and the surrounding area. Two larger lakes are integrated into it, one is used as a bathing lake by many people in summer, the other serves nature as a refuge for rare animal and plant species. The bathing lake is also known under the name Kleihügelsee.
In the valley of the Great Aue between the districts of Vehlage and Fabbenstedt, embedded in old forests, there is a charming lake and recreational landscape, the expansion of which began in 1979. On the one hand there is the Auesee, which was created between 1979 and 1981. As a landscape lake with a water surface of 8.2 hectares, it offers, together with the adjacent area (around 27 hectares), sufficient habitat for protected plant and animal species. Part of the area is designated as a nature reserve.
In the years that followed, a recreational and swimming lake was created on the west side of the Große Aue. With its characteristic bank shape, the lake at Kleihügel or Kleihügelsee (water area 5.6 hectares) blends in perfectly with the landscape. Shallow water areas and immediately adjacent marshland and wet meadow areas as well as the marsh islands in the lake also provide habitat for many plant species. The beach also offers enough space for sports and leisure activities.
Here I always like to be out and about with the camera.

The Oberlübber Bergsee, also known as the "Blue Lake," is picturesquely situated in the Wiehen Hills near Oberlübbe in the municipality of Hille. Formed from a former quarry, the quarry filled with groundwater and rainwater after mining ceased, creating a small but impressive body of water. With a length of approximately 167 meters, a width of up to 50 meters, and an area of around 0.8 hectares, it is considered the largest mountain lake in the Wiehen Hills and also one of the northernmost mountain lakes in Germany. The lake lies at an altitude of approximately 200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by steep rock faces and dense forest, giving it a tranquil and secluded atmosphere. The dramatic landscape, shaped by the industrial past of the quarry, contrasts strikingly with the natural regeneration by trees and vegetation. This contrast makes the Oberlübber Bergsee a fascinating subject for photography and a special place for quiet nature observation. However, the lake is not open to the public as the land is private. Steep cliffs and the great depth pose dangers, which is why activities such as swimming or picnicking on the shore are not recommended.

The DoktorSee Camping and Leisure Park in Rinteln is a versatile holiday destination for cyclists, families, and those seeking relaxation. Located on the artificially created Doktorsee Lake, which originated from a former gravel pit, the 152-hectare site offers a wide range of leisure and overnight accommodation options. The campsite is ideally located for cyclists: Directly on the Weser Cycle Path and only about 1 km from Rinteln's historic old town, a bike tour can be perfectly combined with a stay at the lake. The spacious pitches are equipped with electricity, fresh water, sewage, and satellite connections and offer the right amenities for tents, RVs, and caravans. Those traveling without their own camping equipment can choose from a variety of rental accommodations – from cozy sleeping barrels to comfortable chalets and vacation apartments with lake views. The well-maintained restrooms are partially accessible and located close to the pitches. The Doktorsee itself invites you to swim and relax with its 800-meter-long sandy beach, a large water slide, and a spacious sunbathing lawn. There are several playgrounds and a varied entertainment program for children. Active vacationers can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boating, or adventure mini golf. The floating lake sauna with a lake view also offers a unique wellness experience. Dogs are welcome on site. There is a dog play area and four dog showers for cooling off. However, dogs are not allowed in the swimming lake, although appropriate facilities are available. Guests can enjoy culinary delights in two restaurants directly on the lake, and a bread roll service ensures a relaxed start to the day. An on-site grocery store offers additional supplies, especially during peak season. A special highlight is the annual summer festival "Doktorsee in Flames" with live music and a large fireworks display, which attracts many visitors.

The nature reserve was established in 1936 and is one of the oldest in Westphalia. The Heideweiher pond, with its special flora, gives an impression of what the moor and heath-dominated Rahden region looked like before it was cultivated by humans.
