With a length of approximately 167 meters, a width of up to 50 meters, and an area of around 0.8 hectares, it is considered the largest mountain lake in the Wiehen Hills and also one of the northernmost mountain lakes in Germany. The lake lies at an altitude of approximately 200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by steep rock faces and dense forest, giving it a tranquil and secluded atmosphere. The dramatic landscape, shaped by the industrial past of the quarry, contrasts strikingly with the natural regeneration by trees and vegetation. This contrast makes the Oberlübber Bergsee a fascinating subject for photography and a special place for quiet nature observation. However, the lake is not open to the public as the land is private.
