The Coast Guard Station is located on a dune above the beach. Outside of the travel season, there is parking here. From the roundabout at the parking lot, the Nauset Trail leads to the Salt Pond and the park visitor center. The path is paved and designed as a bike path. After crossing the long boardwalk through the marsh, a footpath branches off that runs parallel to the bike path through a mixed forest, in parts directly along the open water surface in Nauset Bay. Later, you come across the marked Nauset Marsh Trail and walk the path along the Salt Pond to the higher visitor center.

What is now Nauset Marsh was once a freshwater system until the shoreline in the area eroded, connecting the landscape to the sea. When the area was mapped by French explorer Champlain in 1605, it was a navigable bay. Over the years, ocean currents deposited a narrow strip of sand along the outer shore, now known as Nauset Spit.
