The fourteen resistance fighters who were executed by German firing squad in the Loon and Drunen dunes on May 26, 1944, have been given a memorial. Despite several attempts, the bodies of the men were never found, and therefore it has always remained unclear where exactly they were murdered. The monument was unveiled on May 26, 2005, 61 years later. The memorial, designed by Riki Mijling, consists of a four-by-two-meter frame of Corten steel. Lines of poetry are written on the steel, and between the lines are the first names of the fourteen murdered resistance fighters. The four-by-two-meter dimension is symbolic because the Germans had dug two pits of that size into which the bodies fell. Within the frame is a large boulder with a scale bearing the date. The water that collects reflects the sky. Outside the frame lie four smaller boulders bearing the fourteen names. The bodies were never found and are still, so to speak, scattered throughout the dunes.
