Lovely bridge and area. Wish I could have stayed longer and dipped in the blue pool below it.

Fantastic terraced climb/scramble up the nose of eagle crag. Follow the wall up the nose of Eagle Crag to the stile and then plot then pick up the route up the crags. Steep and narrow in places. The ledges can be very boggy underfoot as the peat soaks up plenty of water.

People often go swimming from the banks under the bridge. In the winter when it rains a lot this whole area can be underwater.

A small village on the Cumbria Way with a bus connection to Keswick. At Yew Tree Farm's Flock in Tearoom, you can take a break in the garden with simple meals, cakes, drinks, or ice cream, while enjoying the view of the valley and mountains.

The Flock-in tearoom belongs to the Tree Farm opposite and sells cold and hot drinks, cakes, fudge, and other sweet treats, as well as homemade pasties, sandwiches, toasties, and more. Many of them are made with their own delicious and juicy, award-winning Herwick beef. Small souvenirs such as postcards, buttons, and other items, as well as toothpaste, sunscreen, and wet wipes, are also available there. The food is particularly delicious in the small, pretty garden to the right and behind the house, overlooking the Borrowdale valley (there is also a covered garden behind the house). The staff are super friendly. Open from the beginning of February to November: 6 days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. https://borrowdaleyewtreefarm.co.uk/

Can I bring my dog on waterfall hikes in Borrowdale?

Many trails in Borrowdale are dog-friendly, allowing you to enjoy the stunning scenery with your canine companion. However, it's always advisable to keep dogs on a lead, especially near livestock, steep drops, or sensitive wildlife areas. Always check specific route details for any restrictions.

Are there circular routes that feature waterfalls in Borrowdale?

An example is the Stonethwaite Village – Black Moss Pot loop from Borrowdale, which offers riverside scenery and the Black Moss Pot waterfall as part of its 6.9-mile circuit.

What are some notable waterfalls or natural features I can see on these hikes?

Borrowdale is rich in natural beauty. You can encounter several impressive waterfalls, such as Sourmilk Gill Waterfall, often seen on the ascent to Great Gable, or the tranquil Skelwith Force. The region also features serene tarns like Styhead Tarn, which you'll pass on the Seatoller, Styhead Tarn and Grains Gill Walk, and dramatic fells like Castle Crag.

What kind of terrain can I expect on Borrowdale's waterfall trails?

The terrain varies significantly. You can expect paths ranging from gentle riverside strolls and woodland tracks to rugged, rocky ascents leading to higher fells. Trails often feature ancient woodlands, serene lakeshores, and, of course, the cascading waterfalls themselves. Some routes, especially those leading to higher elevations, can be steep and uneven.

What is the best time of year to experience the waterfalls in Borrowdale?

The waterfalls in Borrowdale are beautiful year-round, but they are particularly spectacular after periods of heavy rain, typically in autumn and winter, when the water flow is at its strongest. Spring brings lush greenery, while summer offers warmer weather for hiking, though the falls might be less powerful. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.

What should I wear or bring for a waterfall hike in Borrowdale?

Given the varied terrain and unpredictable Lake District weather, it's essential to wear waterproof and windproof layers, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, and comfortable clothing. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a map or GPS device, and a fully charged phone. Trekking poles can also be helpful on steeper or uneven sections.

How do trail conditions change after rain, especially near waterfalls?

After rain, trails, especially those near waterfalls, can become very wet, muddy, and slippery. Water levels in rivers and streams will be higher, and some paths might be partially submerged. Always exercise caution, wear appropriate footwear, and be prepared for more challenging conditions underfoot. The increased water flow, however, makes the waterfalls even more impressive.

Are there any places to eat or relax near the waterfall hiking trails?
