Multi tiered waterfall located in the Spearfish Canyon State Nature Area. The waterfall gets its name from stagecoach pioneers locking the wheels of their coaches (or roughlocking) in order to prevent the wagons from taking damage while traversing the drops. There is also a picnic area in order to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery with a packed lunch.

The walk to the waterfall is short, the waterfall itself is very photogenic. There were few people there.

For an easy and accessible waterfall experience, consider the Spearfish Falls Trail. This short, pleasant walk leads directly to the impressive Spearfish Falls, making it perfect for a quick visit or families with young children.

Are there any longer or more challenging waterfall hikes?

Yes, for a more extensive adventure, the Spearfish Canyon Highway route offers a challenging, long-distance hike through the scenic Spearfish Canyon, where you can encounter multiple waterfalls and dramatic limestone formations. Another moderate option is the Savoy-Waterfalls Trail, which provides a good balance of distance and elevation.

What other natural attractions can I see near the waterfall trails?

The Black Hills are rich in natural beauty beyond just waterfalls. Many trails are located within or near Spearfish Canyon, known for its towering limestone cliffs. You can also find other notable waterfalls like Bridal Veil Falls and the View of Roughlock Falls. Further afield, iconic landmarks such as Black Elk Peak and Sylvan Lake offer stunning views and additional hiking opportunities.

What is the best time of year to see the waterfalls at their fullest?

The waterfalls in Black Hills National Forest are typically at their most impressive during spring (April to June) when snowmelt contributes to higher water flow. Early summer also offers lush greenery, enhancing the scenic beauty. While beautiful year-round, autumn brings vibrant foliage, and winter can transform them into stunning ice formations.

Are the waterfall trails in Black Hills National Forest family-friendly?

Yes, there are options suitable for families. The Spearfish Falls Trail is particularly family-friendly due to its short length and minimal elevation gain, offering an easy walk to a beautiful waterfall. Longer trails may be suitable for families with older children or those accustomed to hiking.

Can I bring my dog on the waterfall hikes?

Many trails within Black Hills National Forest are dog-friendly, but it's always best to check specific regulations for each trail or area before you go. Generally, dogs should be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.

What kind of terrain can I expect on these waterfall trails?

The terrain around Black Hills waterfalls varies. You can expect well-maintained paths in some areas, especially on easier trails like the Spearfish Falls Trail.
