The Balver Kulturhöhle impresses right from the first step: a gigantic natural dome, up to eleven meters high, which has been used since the Old Stone Age and is today considered an extraordinary event venue. Where Neanderthals and cave bears once found shelter, you can now experience concerts, theater, and the traditional Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) in an acoustics that is second to none. The cave is only accessible as part of events or guided tours, but a glance at the mighty entrance is enough to reveal why it fascinates as Europe's largest open hall cave. https://www.sauerland.com/de/neusta-pois/balver-hoehle-europas-groesste-kulturhoehle

Free parking is available at the Schützenhalle (shooting hall). A park with a playground is available next door. Restaurants are nearby. A good starting point for hikes (e.g., to the Blue Lagoon).

I recommend doing the tour in 2025. Starting in 2026, a large wind farm with 35 wind turbines will be built in the Balver Forest, which will significantly change the landscape.

Balve offers a wide selection of hiking opportunities, with over 160 easy trails that are perfect for families. In total, there are more than 320 routes to explore, catering to various preferences and fitness levels.
For families with young children, we recommend routes that are generally shorter and have less elevation gain. The Hönne Trail – the enchanted Hönne Valley is an excellent choice, offering a relatively flat path through picturesque scenery. Another great option is the View of the Sauerland Hills, which is shorter and provides lovely vistas without being too strenuous.
Yes, Balve features several circular routes ideal for families. A popular choice is the "Micro-adventure – Rund um die Luisenhütte" which is captured in our Balve: around the Luisenhütte tour. This 9-kilometer trail offers a natural and varied experience, starting conveniently from the Luisenhütte at the Wocklum Nature Park hiking car park.
Balve's family-friendly trails often lead past fascinating natural and historical landmarks. You can explore the dramatic rock formations and caves of the Hönnetal valley, or visit the historic Luisenhütte Adventure Museum, Germany's oldest preserved blast furnace. Some routes also offer glimpses of the beautiful Schloss Wocklum moated castle. For unique natural features, consider exploring highlights like the Log steps and wooden bridges in the Grand Canyon of Lendringsen or the Felsenmeer viewing platform, Hemer.
The Sauerland region, including Balve, is beautiful year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant colors, making them ideal for family outings. Summer is also great, especially for trails that offer shade or lead to refreshing spots. Even in winter, some trails are suitable for walks, though it's always wise to check weather conditions and trail accessibility beforehand.
Many trails in the Balve region are dog-friendly, allowing you to bring your furry companions along. It's always a good idea to keep dogs on a leash, especially in nature reserves or near livestock, and to carry water for them. Please be mindful of local regulations and other hikers.
Balve is well-connected, making many trailheads accessible. For car users, parking is often available at popular starting points like the Wocklum Nature Park hiking car park near the Luisenhütte. While public transport options exist, checking specific bus routes and schedules to trailheads is recommended, especially when planning a family outing. You can find more information on local transport at visitbalve.de.
Yes, you'll find several options for refreshments. The Luisenhütte, a historical and cultural landmark, is a focal point for hiking and often has facilities nearby. There are also various huts and restaurants in the wider Balve area, such as Steinberg's Alpine Hut or Forsthaus Löhen Forest Inn, where families can enjoy a break and a meal.
When hiking with children, it's important to choose trails appropriate for their age and energy levels. Pack plenty of snacks and water, wear comfortable shoes, and dress in layers suitable for changing weather. Engaging children with nature scavenger hunts or storytelling can make the experience even more enjoyable. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
The komoot community highly rates the hiking experiences around Balve, with an average score of 4.58 stars from over 4,700 ratings. Hikers often praise the region's diverse landscapes, the well-maintained trails, and the blend of natural beauty with historical sites, making it a rewarding destination for families.
