This route is amazing, from San Feliu de Guixolx to Tosa de Mar. Make sure you bring a navigator and an 800V battery, as this will ensure you'll be safe both ways. If you do it without a battery, you'll have to be very prepared. I did it years ago and you'd get home very tired, but I did it. Now I can do it well thanks to the battery. Enjoy the views!

Beautiful little hospitable village.

In front of the station, in the area of grass and trees, there is a drinking water fountain. The only problem, in summer, is the hordes of wasps that gather there. If you don't bother them, no problem.

A must visit when you are in the neighborhood. We planned our gravelbike ride to this beautiful little Spanish village. Lovely small streets, little terraces and beautiful colors of the flowers and window frames. High season might be busy.

There are over 60 dedicated no-traffic gravel bike trails around Sant Feliu de Guíxols, offering a wide range of experiences for all skill levels. While many are considered challenging, you can also find moderate and easier options.
Yes, the region is known for its Greenways (Vies Verdes), like the 'Carrilet' Greenway, which are ideal for beginners due to their compacted sand surface and minimal elevation changes. These converted old railway lines offer accessible gravel rides. For example, parts of the Font Picant Train Station – Carrilet Route loop from Santa Cristina d'Aro utilize these gentle paths.
You'll experience a diverse mix of landscapes, from rugged coastal roads and turquoise coves to serene forests of pines, oaks, and cork trees. Inland, routes often traverse rolling hills, agricultural plains with cornfields, and pass by charming Catalonian farmhouses and medieval villages. The area beautifully blends coastal beauty with varied inland terrain.
Yes, many of the no-traffic gravel routes around Sant Feliu de Guíxols are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish in the same location. Examples include the Coll de la Creu d’en Barraquer – Tree-Lined Pathway in Girona loop from Santa Cristina d'Aro or the longer Tren Petit Greenway – Peratallada Village loop from Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
The trails often pass by historical and natural points of interest. You might encounter elements from a Romanesque monastery, like the Porta Ferrada in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, or historical sites such as the Font Picant Train Station. Natural highlights include stunning coastal views, like those near Es Codolar Cove, or the ancient Dolmen of the Cova d'en Daina.
Many of the Greenways (Vies Verdes) are generally dog-friendly, provided your dog is kept on a leash. However, regulations can vary on specific trails or protected natural areas. It's always best to check local signage or official websites for the most current rules regarding pets on individual routes.
Parking is often available near the starting points of popular Greenways or in the towns themselves. For instance, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, as the starting point of the Carrilet Greenway, offers various parking options. Smaller towns like Santa Cristina d'Aro or Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro i s'Agaró, which serve as access points for routes like the Coll de la Creu d’en Barraquer – Font Picant Train Station loop, also have public parking facilities.
While public transport options exist in the region, bringing bikes on buses or trains can sometimes be restricted, especially during peak hours or on smaller services. The 'Carrilet' Greenway connects Sant Feliu de Guíxols with inland towns like Girona, which has good transport links. It's advisable to check with local bus operators (e.g., Sarfa) or train services (Renfe) regarding their bike carriage policies before planning your trip.
The Costa Brava region generally offers pleasant cycling conditions for much of the year. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are particularly ideal, with mild temperatures and less tourist traffic. Summers can be hot, especially inland, so early morning or late afternoon rides are recommended. Winters are usually mild, making it a good destination for year-round cycling.
Absolutely. While the Greenways offer easier sections, many routes in the Sant Feliu de Guíxols area feature significant elevation gains and varied terrain, making them suitable for experienced gravel bikers. For example, the Coll de la Creu d’en Barraquer – Tree-Lined Pathway in Girona loop has nearly 480m of elevation gain over 32km, offering a good challenge.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the diverse terrain that combines coastal views with inland forests and plains, the well-maintained Greenways, and the overall 'cyclist's paradise' atmosphere. The lack of traffic on these dedicated routes is a frequently highlighted benefit.
Yes, several routes are under 50km and offer a traffic-free experience. For instance, the Coll de la Creu d’en Barraquer – Tree-Lined Pathway in Girona loop from Santa Cristina d'Aro is just over 32km, and the Font Picant Train Station – Carrilet Route loop from Santa Cristina d'Aro is around 39km, both providing excellent options for shorter rides.
The Vies Verdes are generally multi-use paths, welcoming cyclists, walkers, and sometimes horse riders. Cyclists are expected to respect other users, maintain a moderate speed, and give way to pedestrians. While permits are not typically required for general use, it's always good practice to be aware of any specific local rules or temporary closures, especially within natural parks. You can find more information about the Greenways on the Visit Guíxols website: 5 Green Ways and Road Bikes.
