Silsersee Lakeside Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice trail. Needs some skill. Unfortunately, many hikers. The flat way to drive from Maloja to Sils without traffic.
Today I would recommend bike trail no. 1 via Petpreir. Based on the pictures on Komoot, I believe that the 200 meters in altitude are worth it.

Lake Sils South Shore Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Maloja route to Isola, then mostly narrow hiking trail to Sils, but with a wonderful view of Lake Sils. I think the best scenic section between Maloja and St. Moritz.

The hiking trail (Isola to Sils) is partially rocky (small sliding sections for touring cyclists). And also remember: hiking trails mean that pedestrians and hikers have priority.

The Chastè peninsula, the Juvel of Lake Sils, is where poets and philosophers would have wanted to stay forever. For F. Nietzsche it was also one of the most beautiful places in the Engadine, which is why the memorial plaque was erected here.

Maloja-Sils

Highlight • Trail

This approximately five kilometer long route is one of the most beautiful cross-country trails in the Engadine lake landscape. You glide from Maloja over Lake Sils, past Isola to Sils Maria. As soon as the Upper Engadine lakes are covered with a thick layer of ice, the track vehicles move out and prepare a wonderful cross-country ski trail for winter sports enthusiasts. The route offers fun for everyone: around 20 meters are prepared for skating, and four lanes are available for classic cross-country skiing. This makes the flat route suitable for both beginners and professionals.

If the route is too short for you, there are many kilometers of cross-country trails that run through the high valley. For example, you can turn around at Sils and walk past the Chasté peninsula back to Maloja.

The starting point is on the lakeshore in Maloja. You can either arrive by bus or park at Giacometti Sport. There you will also be provided with the appropriate equipment if you don't have your own skis.

Andi
August 31, 2025, Nietzsche Memorial Plaque on Chastè Peninsula

The Nietzsche memorial stone at the southern tip was erected in the year of the philosopher's death (1900) in his memory. A stonemason from Promontogno carved verses from Zarathustra into the memorial plaque, which is now integrated into the rock. Here, at the southern end of the peninsula, the view over Lake Sils and Piz da la Margna is particularly beautiful. The reflections in the water create exceptional lighting conditions. Europe's highest-altitude shipping line, operating from mid-June to mid-October. Not in winter, of course, as the water is covered in ice and snow... Routes can be seen on the map. The boathouse for the ship is also located here, with numerous information boards.
