The State Forest has packed dirt trails, mostly flat, with the family-friendly trails having white marks, and the intermediate ones having yellow marks. The area is subject to seasonal closure for hunting, which begins the first Sunday of January and goes on for the remainder of the month.

Kempton Ledge is a great spot to stop to take in the scenery. There is a large opening in the trees here where you can see well beyond the cliff ledge. There are no signs to mark this viewpoint.

Lake Awosting is one of the sky lakes on the Shawangunk Mountain ridge. At this part of the lake, there is a large rock slab which slopes into the lake. This is a great place to take in the views across the lake. There is a roped off swimming area, which has lifeguards during the summer.
