The tunnels were created from the late Middle Ages by the dismantling of Trachyttuff, which was used as an oven stone for the construction of ovens
In the course of the intensive underground mining, the furnace cavities were exploited on a total of seven different soles, which are sometimes connected by deep shafts. In total, around 5 ha of excavation area can be detected today.
In World War II they also served as a shelter from bombing raids.
