The name Frangokastello comes from a Venetian castle built in 1371 on a low peninsula, the crenellated outer walls of which still stand today. Above the south gate of the fortress, the coat of arms of the Venetian builders, the Lion of Saint Mark, is still well preserved. Inside the structure, however, only the foundations of the complex are visible. The castle, which was restored again by the Venetians under their commander Nicolo Dona in 1593, was later abandoned. Subsequently, the local inhabitants of Sfakio removed the beams from the towers and rooms.

Easily accessible on foot from Azogires. We combined a visit to the caves with a visit to this castle. The trail is well marked and unovergrown, making it easy to hike even in shorts. Great views!

Almost 200 meters above the village you have a premium view - logically. The fortress is also pretty well preserved but unsecured. That means there are rocks and pieces of wall lying around everywhere. I thought it was great. Details: https://www.crete.pl/de/twierdza/turecka-twierdza-nad-agia-roumeli.html These forts are collectively known as koulés and koulédes (pl). Their presence is a testament to the enormous undertaking undertaken by the Turks after crushing another Cretan uprising in 1866-69. To prevent further uprisings for independence, the Ottoman troops occupying the island built a chain of such forts all over Crete.

Crete's rich history means you can explore a variety of fortifications, primarily Venetian and Ottoman constructions. These include impressive Venetian fortresses like the Koulés Fortress (Spaniakos) in Heraklion and the Fortezza in Rethymno, as well as Ottoman-era structures. The island's strategic importance led to diverse architectural styles reflecting its past rulers.
For deep historical insights, consider the Spinalonga Island Fortress, which served as a Venetian fortification, an Ottoman settlement, and later a leper colony, offering a moving experience. The Koules Fortress in Heraklion provides context on the Cretan War, while the Fortezza in Rethymno showcases Venetian military architecture and its role against Ottoman invasions.
Yes, Frangokastello Castle on the south coast is famous for the phenomenon of 'Drosoulites,' shadowy figures said to appear at dawn in late spring, representing fallen warriors from the 1828 battle during the Greek War of Independence.
The best time to visit castles in Crete is generally during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Summer months (June-August) are also popular, but can be very hot, so early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended. Some castles, like the Fortezza in Rethymno, host cultural events during the summer.
Absolutely. Frangokastello Castle is particularly family-friendly, offering a well-preserved fortress to explore and a beautiful, shallow beach right next to it, perfect for children. Many castles provide open spaces for exploration, sparking imagination for all ages.

Yes, several castles are located near beautiful beaches. Frangokastello Castle is situated directly on a well-known beach with clear, shallow waters. The Michel Bastion, Spinalonga is also near a beach, and boat trips to Spinalonga offer views of turquoise waters.
While popular sites are wonderful, for a quieter experience, consider the Koulés Fortress of Askifou or the Sfakia Fortress (Castel di Sfacia). These offer historical interest and views without the larger crowds of more central locations.
Many of Crete's castles and fortresses, especially the larger, restored ones like the Koules Fortress in Heraklion and the Fortezza in Rethymno, are open year-round, though hours may be reduced in winter. They often host cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts, indicating their continued accessibility. It's always advisable to check specific opening times before your visit.
Visitors frequently enjoy the rich historical atmosphere, the stunning panoramic views from the fortifications, and the opportunity to imagine life in ancient times. The blend of Venetian and Ottoman architecture, the stories of sieges and battles, and the beautiful coastal or mountain settings are often highlighted as key attractions.
