We did the hike in October 2025, starting in Xiro Chorio and going clockwise to Chromonastiri, then back through the Mili Gorge. We started on a wide gravel track up to Chromonastiri, and from there descended on a rather overgrown path to the upper entrance of the gorge. The path through the gorge is sometimes difficult to discern, and the railings and rest areas, built in 2015, are in very poor condition, some broken and unusable. The ruins of the mills exude a certain morbid charm and are well worth seeing. Conclusion: A fairly nice hike, but not really a highlight or a "must-do" in Crete for me. 🌟🌟🌟out of 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Very beautiful waterfall, the gorge was worth it for that reason alone...about an hour from the entrance to the Exo Mouliana car park and maybe about half an hour from the beach... The gorge itself...it felt like you went through the jungle once, a bit like the Plivicher lakes over wooden walkways, a bit of climbing and rocks, 1 great waterfall and 1 open gorge with lots of rock walls and at the end a small, beautiful, clear bay and the smell of herbs in between....

High waterfall with a small pool where you can swim. There are a few tables with benches at the edge for a break. Very cosy spot.

Apart from a few millstones, the interior contains nothing that would illustrate the technology.

For a family-friendly experience, the Imbros Gorge is an excellent choice. It offers magnificent rock formations and narrow canyon sections, and is less demanding than Samaria Gorge. The hike typically takes 2-3 hours and is suitable for most visitors, including children. Agia Irini Gorge is another good option, offering a tranquil hike with plenty of shade and a relatively easy downhill path.
If you're looking for a less crowded experience, consider the Imbros Gorge or the Agia Irini Gorge. Imbros Gorge offers a peaceful hike with beautiful views and is part of the E4 European long-distance path. Agia Irini Gorge, located near Sougia, is a hidden gem with lush landscapes and rich flora, providing a tranquil hiking experience away from the crowds.
Crete's canyons are rich in natural beauty. In gorges like Samaria, you'll find towering cliff walls, lush vegetation including pine and cypress trees, and diverse wildlife such as the Cretan wild goat (kri-kri). Agia Irini Gorge is a habitat for the Cretan wild goat and rare birds like the Bearded Vulture and Golden Eagles. Mili Gorge is a botanical garden with various plants, trees, and a stream creating small waterfalls.
Yes, many canyons in Crete hold historical significance. The Samaria Gorge features remnants of old churches and the abandoned Samaria village. Zakros Gorge, also known as the 'Valley of the Dead,' is named for the Minoan tombs found in caves along its walls. Mili Gorge is notable for its abandoned village, which once housed about 30 watermills, and features old houses and atmospheric chapels built into cliff faces, including a restored water mill.
The best time to hike Crete's canyons is typically during the spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is milder, and the landscapes are vibrant. Summer can be very hot, especially in open sections, though some gorges like Agia Irini and Mili offer more shade. Always check local conditions and opening times, as some gorges may close during heavy rain or winter months.
For a comfortable hike, pack sturdy hiking shoes or sneakers, as paths are often rocky. Bring plenty of water, especially for longer gorges like Samaria. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is essential, along with snacks. Depending on the season, a light jacket might be useful for cooler mornings or evenings. For gorges with water crossings or swimming opportunities, consider bringing swimwear and a towel.
Crete's canyons are famous for their impressive geological formations. The Iron Gates (Sideroportes) in Samaria Gorge is a highlight, where the cliff walls narrow to only 2-4 meters apart. Imbros Gorge also features narrow passages, some as tight as 1.6 meters, and dramatic rock formations like the Stone Arch.
For some popular gorges like Samaria Gorge, there is an entrance fee, which contributes to the maintenance and protection of the national park. Imbros Gorge also typically has a small entrance fee. It's always advisable to check the specific requirements for each gorge before your visit, as policies can change.
Beyond hiking the canyons themselves, Crete offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous road cycling routes, such as the 'Malia Old Town – Ascent to Mohos loop' or the 'Arkadi Monastery – Lake Potamoi loop'. Gravel biking is also popular, with routes like the 'View of the Rodopou Peninsula – View of Balos Beach and the lagoon loop'. For more hiking, explore easy trails like the 'Kourtaliotiko Gorge Waterfall loop'. You can find more details on these activities in the Road Cycling Routes in the Crete, Gravel biking in the Crete, and Easy hikes in the Crete guides.
The duration of canyon hikes in Crete varies significantly. The famous Samaria Gorge is a full-day hike, typically taking 4-6 hours to complete its 16-18 kilometers. Imbros Gorge is a shorter, more manageable hike of about 2-3 hours for its 8 kilometers. Agia Irini Gorge usually takes around 3 hours, while Zakros Gorge (Valley of the Dead) can be completed in approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Mili Gorge offers a relatively short but rewarding experience, often taking 1-2 hours.
Yes, some canyons offer amenities. For instance, the village of Imbros, at the start of Imbros Gorge, has cafes and taverns with parking. Along the Agia Irini Gorge path, you can find designated rest areas with facilities. Mili Gorge, near Rethymno, has tavernas, particularly in summer, for refreshments. The Richtis Waterfall, located within a gorge, also features a rest area with tables and benches.
The Kritsa Gorge offers a unique and adventurous short hike. It involves smaller climbs and can be suitable for sure-footed children. Hikers will encounter light climbing sections and a pool of water that needs to be navigated. It's known for its beautiful scenery and is a worthwhile experience for those seeking a slightly more challenging, yet rewarding, short trek.
