Lake Piediluco

Highlight • Lake

Lago di Piediluco / Lake Piediluco
Located in the southeastern foothills of Umbria, with a tributary bordering Lazio, Lake Piediluco, although 1.85 km² wide, is the largest natural lake basin in the region after Lake Trasimeno. Its name seems to be interpreted as "at the foot of the sacred grove."

Together with Lakes Lungo, Ripasottile, and Ventina, located in the province of Rieti, it represents one of the remains of the ancient Lacus Velinus, a large basin of alluvial origin formed starting in the Quaternary period.

The irregularly shaped lake, with a circumference of approximately 13 kilometers, is located at an altitude of 375 meters and has a maximum depth of approximately 19 meters. Its natural tributary is the Fuscello stream; the other two tributaries are represented by artificial canals. One connects it to the Velino River, while the other, 42 kilometers long, consists almost entirely of tunnels and diverts part of the waters of the Nera River into the lake. The inflow and outflow of water is entirely tailored to the energy needs of the industry in nearby Terni. The emissary, the Velino River, is diverted towards Marmoré, where it flows into the Nera River to form the Marmore Waterfall.

Battle of Lake Trasimene

Highlight • Historical Site

Battaglia del Trasimeno
The Battle of Trasimeno
It was June 24, 217 BC, when the Roman army of consul Gaius Flaminius Nepos was trapped in a plain between the lake and the hills, surrounded by the army of the Carthaginian general Hannibal. The battle is one of the most important and dramatic clashes during the Second Punic War, fought in the third century BC between Rome and Carthage for supremacy over the Mediterranean. It is said that more than 15,000 Roman soldiers died there, their bodies burned in pits called ustrina.
This is evidenced by the numerous artifacts found: coins, weapons, etc. In 1996, the municipality founded the "Permanent Documentation Center on the Battle of Trasimeno" in the immediate vicinity of the historic center.
A series of panels depicts the entire Second Punic War and the battle itself, based on descriptions by Polybius and Livy.

Clitunno Springs

Highlight • Lake

Fonti del Clitunno - Ristorante Pizzeria, Campello Sul Clitunno
Dream apartments, treat yourself to the relaxation you deserve.
A gastronomic experience in the Parco della Poesia and a garden with tables for pampering yourself.
From here, O Clitumnus, the white herds and the bull, the greatest holocaust, have repeatedly dipped into your sacred waters, bringing Roman triumphs to the temples of the gods.
History
Have you ever seen the Fonti del Clitunno? If not, and I don't think so, otherwise you would have told me about it, go and see.
"I saw it recently and regret having done it too late."
Thus wrote Pliny the Younger to a friend, and his advice still holds true today. The Fonti del Clitunno as we see them today are different from those of the first century, during Pliny's time. A violent earthquake in 444 AD changed the face of the area and was likely the cause of the narrowing of the Clitunno River, which had previously been navigable. The layout of the Clitunno springs as we see them today is thanks to the patient work of Paolo Campello della Spina, who, between 1860 and 1865, removed the earth to make room for the pond and encouraged the growth of vegetation that still characterizes the Clitunno springs today. A few years later, Giosue Carducci wrote the barbaric ode "Alle Fonti del Clitunno."

April 11, 2026, Lakeside Cycle Path – Anello del Lago Trasimeno

I walked the stretch from Borghetto to Castiglione del Lago (8/9 km) and was a little disappointed that you only see the lake once and... watch out for cyclists coming in the opposite direction.

A circular route of approximately 60 km. Completely on a dirt track (only 2 km on the road). The route is exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians, immersed in nature, with breathtaking views, and from San Feliciano you can see sunsets that heal the soul, so beautiful they are, absolutely worth doing.

Magic nightride! Thnx for sharing this route. I started this ride anti clockwise 20.30hr in late June. Next to the great views over the lake at sunset it started to get dark when passing Liciano Niccone (So bring some good light with you) From there the last climb trough the forrest was pure magical. At both sides of the road the forest was full of fireflies. Quit some stunning experience!
