Volcano hiking trails in Tenerife traverse a landscape shaped by significant volcanic activity, offering diverse terrain from arid, lunar-like plains to lush ancient forests. The island is dominated by Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak, surrounded by vast calderas and solidified lava flows. Beyond the central volcanic massif, the northeast features ancient laurisilva forests and deep gorges, while the northwest presents dramatic coastal cliffs and green peaks. This geological diversity provides a wide range of hiking experiences across varying elevations.

You can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Teide here. A hike is highly recommended and quite interesting 👍🏻. At 3,718 meters, Mount Teide is the highest mountain in Spain. The ascent to the dormant volcano is short, but can be strenuous for those who are not very experienced. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Canary Islands. Be sure to book your Teide National Park access pass and cable car ticket in advance.

I was able to walk there unhindered. A dirt road leads directly there. I was here a few years ago. Back then, remnants of the mirrored surfaces were still visible. Now, nothing remains, just a rusty skeleton. But still impressive.

Tenerife offers a wide array of volcano hiking trails. Our guide features over 25 distinct routes, ranging from easy strolls to challenging ascents, allowing you to explore the island's unique volcanic landscapes.
Tenerife's volcanic origins have created a truly diverse and dramatic landscape, often described as 'Mars-like' or lunar. From the vast craters and solidified lava flows of Teide National Park to the ancient laurel forests shaped by volcanic activity, the island provides an extraordinary backdrop for hiking. You can often hike above the cloud cover, enjoying clear skies and panoramic views.
Our guide includes trails for all abilities. You'll find 3 easy routes perfect for beginners, 24 moderate trails offering a good challenge, and 2 difficult routes for experienced hikers seeking a strenuous adventure. This variety ensures there's a volcano hike suitable for every fitness level.
Yes, there are several easy and family-friendly options. For a moderate, yet rewarding experience, consider the Montaña Pelada Beach – Pelada Beach loop from El Médano, which offers coastal volcanic scenery. Many trails in Teide National Park also have accessible sections or shorter loops suitable for families.
Teide National Park is a geological marvel. You'll encounter vast volcanic craters, ancient solidified lava flows, and distinctive rock formations like the famous Roque Cinchado. The landscape is truly otherworldly, offering a unique insight into the island's volcanic history.
Yes, if you plan to ascend to the summit of Mount Teide (above the cable car station), a permit is required. It's advisable to book this permit well in advance, as availability is limited. However, many other trails within Teide National Park do not require a permit.
Tenerife enjoys a consistently mild, year-round climate, often called the 'Island of Eternal Spring.' This makes it an excellent destination for volcano hiking in any season. However, for summit attempts on Mount Teide, spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and generally stable weather conditions.
Even with the mild climate, conditions can change rapidly, especially at higher altitudes. We recommend wearing layers, including a windproof and waterproof jacket. Sturdy hiking boots are essential for navigating uneven volcanic terrain. Don't forget sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and plenty of water.
Parking is generally available at trailheads and visitor centers within Teide National Park and other popular hiking areas. However, during peak season or busy times, parking lots can fill up quickly. Arriving early is recommended, especially for popular routes. Public transport options are also available to some key areas.
Absolutely! Beyond the volcanic landscapes themselves, you'll find stunning landmarks. In Teide National Park, the Roque Cinchado is a famous rock formation. For breathtaking vistas, the View of Masca, La Gomera, and Teide offers expansive panoramas. The island is dotted with incredible viewpoints showcasing its diverse beauty.
The komoot community highly rates hiking in Tenerife, with an average score of 4.3 stars. Reviewers often praise the unique 'Mars-like' volcanic landscapes, the dramatic elevation changes offering incredible views, and the opportunity to hike above the clouds. The well-maintained trails and diverse scenery, from lunar plains to lush forests, are frequently highlighted.
Yes, many volcano hikes in Tenerife are designed as circular routes, allowing you to experience diverse scenery without retracing your steps. An example is the View of Mount Teide – Samara Viewpoint loop from Mirador de Samara, which offers stunning views of Teide and the surrounding volcanic terrain.
